Round Top Mountain, May of 2006Randy and I declared a "National Backcountry Ski Day" and skipped work. We took off and hiked up Round Top Mountain (near Kirkwood and Carson Pass). It was easy to get to the top of the ski runs, but a little harder to bag the summit. The true summit is at 10,380 feet, although being a "round" mountain there are a few other marked false summits. We easily got to one peak that had a marker, but it clearly said Round Top #2. I'd imagine that most people stop here, but it was clear that the next peak over was higher. Once you summit a mountain, it's ok to skip the peak in the future. But this was our first visit to Round Top. The cliffs at the top are a good class 3. Trailhead to peak is about 4 miles and probably only a 2500' elevation change. These pictures will link to flickr where you can post comments, mark favorites, and order copies.
